Sweety’s Addiction

Antacid of champions.

He is addicted to using baking soda as an antacid. We buy it in 2 pound boxes. A few days ago – he ran out. It was bedtime and he was freaking out because he was afraid that he wouldn’t be able to sleep through his heartburn or whatever if he couldn’t have some before bed.

So he peeked in the cabinet where the box stays. Eureka! The previous box had leaked out some during its stay with us!

He scraped it up and picked out whatever grub that was mixed in with it the best that he could. He was so happy. Like a crackhead who found a rock hidden in the couch cushion.

He's not afraid of germs.

It was just enough to mix up and drink.

Gross. Gross. Gross.

I offered to go to the store and get a new box for him but he declined. He is brave and unafraid of eating termite eggs.

  1. Wow.

I use that for heartburn as a last ditch effort if I am out of everything else. Tell him to get some friggin Pepcid AC the little pills… they are like heaven and they don’t cause the volcano burps that baking soda does.

He likes this because it has the same thing in in as Pepcid does (so he says) that stops the heartburn and it’s so cheap. And he can clean the sink with the part he doesn’t drink.

The volcano burps? We LOVE the volcano burps. They give me the giggles. My night isn’t complete until I’m tucked in and he burps loud enough to rattle the covers.

Frequent heartburn can mean serious health issues… Has he seen a doc about it?

No doctor. I’ve told him to check it out but he won’t go to the doctor unless he’s bleeding or in constant pain.

  4. I remember that he didn’t like to go to the doctor from his back problems; but he really should get checked out. It’s probably nothing; but it’s better safe than sorry. And, if it is something that they can fix, he won’t be the doing anything with scrapings from the cabinet. Whatever was on that spoon was gross.

I’m pestering him to go to the doctor. I think I’ll just make an appointment and tell him when to be there.

He did manage to pick most of the whatever off of the spoon before eating it. Still not for me though!

  5. Oh, that is so gross on the spoon. My grandfather used that stuff. I love your reply about M & M’s! So True.

I’ll use the baking soda if my stomach doesn’t feel good but I don’t make a habit of it. The taste is just too yucky.

Yes, M&Ms are magical like that!

I’m starting to think there isn’t ANYTHING that can’t be done or made better with a little baking soda!

I figured there was something healing about M&Ms. I’ve been eating them my whole life and I’m still here. ;)

  8. Sweety…he’s a unique little booger. (And I agree about the doc; no-one should have that much heartburn.)

Sweety is definitely a different kind of cat.

He’s seen the concern in the comments here and I think they are helping me talk him into a visit with the doctor.

  9. That’s the “old school” antacid. Many folks still use it today. But scraping it off the cupboard…nah!!! I don’t think so!!

    Chickie said:

Me either, me either. When I saw him scraping it up (and did you see the scraper thing? I asked him if he was current on his tetanus shot!) I really didn’t think he’d eat it. He did & then went right to sleep!

  11. I never trusted baking soda either till I had to use it for a bad case of heartburn. It works freakin miracles. MIRACLES.
    I understand Sweety’s issue.

Sweety really can’t get by without it.

I’m mean and if he’s all settled into bed and I know he hasn’t had any I’ll ask him if he needs it. Then he can’t go to sleep until he has some because he fears the heartburn.

    Wow, I am a bitch.
