Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Holy crap, batman. Could it rain any more? I think it’s been going on since Saturday or so. I’m sick of it. I’m sick of having to act like some sort of herding animal in order to wrangle the canines outside to potty. There was a lull in the rain today and I was trying to shove Tiny Dog outside. Earlier in the day, she had pissed on the porch instead of going on the grass. I never thought I’d be one to pick a small dog up, look her in the eye and say, “I’m going to snap. your. ass. in. half. If you don’t get on the grass, bitch.” She got the message.

My niece (Who just turned 10 at the end of March! I remember when she was a fetus!) read the Twilight series of books and said I should too. I’ve read the first two and they were okay. I’m not so struck by them that I’m running out to get the last two since they’re not available in paperback. She’s going to visit this summer and said she’ll bring them for me to read then. She called me on Mother’s Day and we had a nice talk about books. I swear, if I hadn’t been there when my sister squeezed her out – I’d say she was mine.

Sylvie is sad that the Twilight books are over and asked me to find her something like them to read. “I need romance, vampires and just a little comedy. Okay?” I’m on the prowl. I bought Night World today and am going to read it to see if it will meet her specifications. She’s read and really liked the Eragon series but didn’t get into Harry Potter. Let me know if you (or your kids) have any suggestions.

Just got off of the phone with Sylvie. She’s been riding her bike 6 or 7 blocks to school this week. Some kid was giving her shit and asked her why she wore a helmet. (He didn’t) Her reply? “I value my brain.” Damn, I love her.

See that widget in the sidebar that has my flickr photos floating around? Sweety actually mentioned that it was neat and he’s not one to say anything nice about the blog.

I managed to secure our wireless network yesterday! Yay, me! We got the new router awhile back and when I tried to do it everything was messed up and we couldn’t get online at all. Yesterday when I was clearing the “trash” on my computer, I realized that some of the stuff in there wasn’t mine. I have a feeling that the kid next door has been riding on our wireless from her bedroom. That doesn’t really bother me but when it hit me that if I could see her trash…well, maybe she could see mine? Not cool. It only took a couple of hours of pounding my head against the wall to get all of the computers and the damn game system in sync with the secure wireless system.

  1. Have Sylvie check out the undead series by MaryJanice Davidson.
They have all her requirements, fun, romance, & vampires. If she’s read them, let me know & I can recommend a lot more

Thanks! I know she hasn’t read them because the Twilight books were the first kind that she’d read like that. I’ll find the first one of these and read it before letting her check it out.

  2. OK no vampires, but I just finished the Knife Of Never Letting Go – it was terrific, and the start of a series. Great for girls & boys – has a good pro-female subtext.

Also I LOVE the Phillip Pullman series Northern Lights, but it might be a bit old for her conceptually. Maybe in a couple of years’ time.

  3. That a great comeback by Sylvie. Our kids were required to wear their helmets or they lost their bike privileges. Once when our daughter was younger, she fell backwards off her bike and cracked her head on the pavement. Without a helmet, it would have been a trip to the emergency room; but since she was protected, it just ended up being a trip to the store for a new helmet.

P.S. I’m glad that you got your network secured. I know someone who became a warez distributer and didn’t even know it.

Kids just don’t realize how helpful those helmets are! I’m glad that Sophie wears hers despite teasing.

I’m glad I got the network secure too. I notice it runs faster now that it’s not being stolen too.
